Cypress – The Chargers finished the first day of the 17th Annual Cypress Charger Invitational 0-2 after falling to Long Beach City and Orange Coast on Friday afternoon.
Game 1: The hosts opened up the Cypress Charger Invitational with a tough 11-4 loss to Long Beach City College. The Chargers struggled to get in rhythm against a tough Vikings defense, scoring only two goals in each half.
The Vikings opened up the scoring in the first four minutes of the game with three goals. However, the Chargers kept things close as they managed to score two of their own thanks to Casey Burke (So.) and Miranda Hernandez (Fr.) to close the period. The game didn't remain tight for long as the Vikings held Cypress scoreless in the second period while going on a 4-0 run to close the half.
Long Beach picked up where they left off at the start of the second half, scoring two more goals to take a 9-2 lead. Emilee Yates (So.) tried to bring Cypress back in the game with two goals in the third period, but Long Beach scored one more after Yates' second goal to finish the period 10-4. The Vikings added one more to their tally in the final period to put the Chargers away.
Game 2: The Chargers struggles continued in the second game of the day with a 14-3 loss to Orange Coast College. The Pirates came out strong, going up 2-0 over Cypress in the first period. The Chargers were able to bounce back in the second period with two goals from Casey Burke (So.) but the Pirates added three goals of their own to go into halftime with a 5-2 lead.
The Chargers couldn't keep up with Orange Coast in the second half. The Pirates added nine goals to their tally while Cypress would score only one and lose 14-3.
Cypress (0-2) will get a rematch with Long Beach City College on day two of the Charger Invitational. Cypress is scheduled to take on Long Beach City College on Saturday, September 4th at 11:00 am followed by a matchup against Ventura College at 12:30 pm.
