CYPRESS, CA – The No. 21 Cypress College women's volleyball team (7-4, 2-2 OEC) swept past the Santiago Canyon Hawks (3-7, 0-4 OEC) 3-0 at home on Wednesday night (25-10, 25-21, 25-8). It is their second consecutive sweep at home.
Sophomore standout Brianna Johnson again led the way for Cypress with 12 kills on 14 attempts. Freshman Khamis Berneker added 8 kills, 7 digs, and 2 blocks on the night, while Taylor Togia served up 28 assists.
The Chargers made it look easy in the opening set, jumping out to an early 12-5 lead. The Hawks struggled serving to open the game and Cypress capitalized, extending the lead to 21-8, before putting away the first set 25-10.
The Hawks trailed 12-5 early in the second set, but managed to answer with a 7-2 run to cut into the deficit. However, an ace and a kill from Cypress freshman Brianna Georgopoulos helped the Chargers pull away and take the second set 25-21.
Cypress completed the sweep with a dominant third set, as the Hawks struggled to get by the Chargers' defense at the net. The Chargers took set three 25-8.
Women's volleyball will return to action with two conference home games next week. The Chargers will host Riverside College on Wednesday, followed by a showdown with Saddleback College on Friday. Both games are scheduled for 6:00 pm.
