Huntington Beach- The Chargers (5-1, 1-1) earned their first Orange Empire Conference win after a 3-0 win over the Goldenwest Rustlers (2-3-1, 0-1-1). Freshmen Taylor Jones and Andrea Castro found the back of the net for the Chargers as did sophomore Karla Lopez, while sophomore goalkeeper Paulina Serna earned her fourth clean sheet of the season.
Cypress College got on the board early in the game as forward Taylor Jones scored at the 1:20 mark thanks to an assist from sophomore Gissel Avila. Despite the soaring start, the Chargers couldn't carry the momentum for the rest of the first half as they only attempted two shots and were held to a 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Andrea Castro was active on both sides of the field, attempting two shots and defending the wing on her half the field. Her efforts were finally rewarded with a goal as Andrea Castro doubled the Chargers lead in the 83rd minute. Karla Lopez gave Cypress an insurance goal in the 85th minute through an assist by Gissel Avila, her second of the game, to put the Rustlers away.
Cypress will look to extend their win total against Santa Ana on Tuesday, September 22nd at 3:00 PM.
