Chargers Win Sixteenth Straight Game

Cypress, CA - Cypress College Softball (16-1, 10-0 OEC) remain undefeated in the Orange Empire Conference play with a 7-0 victory over the Riverside Tigers (10-10, 4-6 OEC) on Thursday.

The Chargers extend their winning streak to 16 games thanks to a dominant pitching effort from Taylor Pierce (7-1, 1.33 ERA) who threw five shutout innings to receive the win. Vanessa Ledesma threw two shutout innings in relief to secure the lead, while Allyson Painter and Nicole Wise both went 2-for-3 with two RBI to carry Cypress' offense.

The Riverside Tigers appeared to threaten in the opening inning by hitting back-to-back singles. However, Taylor Pierce remained poise and forced a fly out to left field for the first out. Pierce followed up with a strikeout and a pop fly to herself to escape the inning.

The Chargers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with Justice Walker on third when Allyson Painter hit a sharp grounder off the pitcher's mound for an RBI single. After Painter stole second base, Nicole Wise hit a single to left field to bring Painter home and give Cypress a 2-0 lead.

Alexis Carmona sparked the Chargers to a five-run rally in the fifth inning with a single to right field. Melanie Okazaki capitalized with a hard-hit double to left field to bring Carmona home and advanced to third on an error. Tobi Salzman kept the momentum alive with a double to right field to bring in another run and Taylor Pierce lined a single to left to put Cypress ahead 5-0. After Jezz Portillo grounded into a double play, Jenny Vazquez and Justice Walker got on base from a single and walk, respectively. Painter and Wise hit back-to-back RBI singles to extend the Chargers' lead 7-0.

Cypress will return to action on the road tomorrow against Mt. SAC at 5:00pm followed by a non-conference double-header at home against Citrus on Saturday, March 19. Games are scheduled for 12:00/2:00pm.
