Cypress Calif.- The Cypress Chargers baseball team (19-6, 9-4 OEC) completed the season sweep over Irvine Valley College (14-12, 6-7 OEC) with a 4-3 win in extra innings on Friday afternoon.
The game was scoreless through two innings until IVC got on the board in the top of the third with a Dillon Millard RBI single. The Chargers answered with an Aaron Case RBI double in the third inning, an Austin Case solo home run in the fourth, and Joe Vanmarter RBI single in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead over IVC heading into the sixth. Irvine Valley responded with one run in the sixth and another in the top of the ninth to tie the game 3-3 and send it to extra innings. IVC would not be able to score in the top of the tenth inning. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning, Chargers catcher John Santospago hit a walk off single that scored Jackson Willeford and won the game 4-3. Payton Smith (1-0) got his first victory of the season on the mound after allowing three hits, one run, one walk, and collecting three strikeouts in four innings pitched. John Santospago led Cypress from the plate with three hits and the game winning RBI in five at bats.
The Chargers will take a break from OEC action as they travel to the AHC Spring Tournament next week.
